Man Who Allegedly Shot 11 Year Old Girl in the Head Surrenders to Police

ANTIOCH, CALIFORNIA — A 23-year-old man accused of shooting an 11-year-old girl in the head earlier this month has surrendered to authorities, Antioch police report.

Police identified the suspect as Ryan Hardy, who investigators say turned himself in at the San Francisco Sheriff’s Office after about a week of negotiations involving family members.

Investigators say the shooting happened around midday on January 5, 2026, at the Delta View Apartment complex on Delta Fair Boulevard (3915 Delta Fair Blvd.), as a family was driving out of the complex on the way to a grocery store. Police say someone opened fire toward the family’s SUV, and a bullet struck the 11-year-old in the head.

Antioch police have described the shooting as a case of mistaken identity, saying the girl and her family were not involved in criminal activity and were not the intended target.

The girl, whose identity is being protected, was originally listed in critical condition. She was reportedly unable to see.

Now, however, reports indicate that she is regaining some of her vision and is able to walk with assistance.

She is being treated at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland.

Hardy is in custody following his surrender, and KTVU reported his bail was set at about $2.9 million.

The investigation remains open. Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact Antioch Police Detective John Cox at (925) 481-8147 or jcox@antiochca.gov, according to the Antioch Herald.

We wish the victim a full and speedy recovery.
