Impaired Rivian Driver Crashes Into Lafayette Building, Police Say

LAFAYETTE, CALIFORNIA – Early Saturday morning, just after the clock struck midnight, the driver of a Rivian SUV allegedly made a very bad choice.

They decided to drive under the influence, police say. And, it ended poorly.

According to the Lafayette Police Department, a driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI after their SUV crashed into a vacant building in downtown Lafayette early Saturday morning.

Officers were dispatched to the intersection of Mt. Diablo Boulevard and Moraga Road at about 12:20 a.m., roughly 20 minutes after midnight, and found the SUV slammed into the structure, according to a Lafayette Police Department statement.

Police said officers contacted the driver at the scene and arrested him for driving under the influence. Authorities did not release the driver’s name, and no injuries were reported in the crash, according to the same statement.

Police have not said what caused the Rivian to leave the roadway or whether impairment was determined by alcohol, drugs, or a combination, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The building looks to be the former art gallery on the corner. Thankfully, it’s vacant and unoccupied.

That’s a tough turn under the best of circumstances. And driving a powerful SUV after midnight while intoxicated is NOT the best of circumstances.

I always appreciate a “before and after.”

Apparently somebody just drove a car right through the glass windows and into the terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
    I hope this isn’t a trend.

  2. That’s a tough turn under the best of circumstances? What’s actually challenging is crossing the road safely when drivers aren’t paying attention. In this instance, he was simply fortunate that no one was in the crosswalk
