Public Health Alert Issued for Martinez Refinery, Crews On the Scene

MARTINEZ, CALIFORNIA – Contra Costa Health says its Hazardous Materials Program response team has been dispatched to conduct air monitoring after community complaints of unusual odors near the Martinez Refining Company.

County health officials say the refinery reported a Community Warning System (CWS) Level 1 incident at 10:53 a.m. tied to flaring at the facility, and that more details will be posted as they become available.

As I write this around 2:45pm, that’s still the status message on the CWS system. No new details have come out about what, if anything, is going on.

A Level 1 CWS notification is generally used for situations where residents may hear, smell, or see signs of an event, but no action is required for most people.

It’s possible that there’s no leakage or other issue. Again, Contra Costa Health says its hazmat team is actively investigating and monitoring air conditions, so there appear to be crews on the ground at the moment.
