A New IKEA is Coming to Pleasanton, But There’s a Big Catch

PLEASANTON, CALIFORNIA – IKEA has announced that they will soon open a new store in Pleasanton.

But if you’re salivating over the idea of Swedish meatballs for cheap, you might be in for a disappointment.

According to IKEA and a report by the Pleasanton Weekly, the company plans to open an IKEA “Plan and Order Point with Pick-up” in Summer 2026 at Pleasanton Square Shopping Center.

IKEA says the new concept store will open at Pleasanton Square Shopping Center, a retail center off I-580 (the center is commonly listed at 5755 Johnson Drive, Pleasanton).

What does that mean, exactly?

This is not a traditional IKEA. The “Plan and Order” store concept is designed for planning help and big orders, especially for projects that usually require more guidance (think kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, closets, and storage setups).

Basically, you can go there to decide on IKEA stuff. But you’ll still need to have it shipped, either to the Plan and Order store so you can pick it up, or sometimes directly to your house.

Sadly, then, we won’t be getting a big store you can wander around. And more pointedly, we won’t be getting the meatballs. That’s the catch.

But, it’s something. IKEA had long planned a full-size Dublin store. They ultimately pulled out and decided to sell the property instead.

This Pleasanton move fits IKEA’s broader strategy of expanding with smaller-format “customer meeting points” that bring planning services closer to where people live, while leaning on delivery and pick-up for fulfillment.

In other words: IKEA still wants Tri-Valley customers — it is just meeting them with a different model than the massive big-box store many people hoped for. We still get an IKEA, just not the one most people expected.

If you need help planning a new kitchen, the Pleasanton spot will be great. But if your ideal IKEA trip is impulse-buying a cart full of small items, walking out with a bookcase today, and grabbing frozen treats on the way out — this format is a very different experience.
