A Popular East Bay Cupcake Spot is Miraculously Back from the Dead

SAN RAMON, CALIFORNIA – The legend of the phoenix suggests that the mystical bird would occasionally crumble to ash, only to return to life in a new form.

That’s probably only a myth. But a popular cupcake spot in San Ramon is channeling that old legend, with a miraculous return–just two days before Valentine’s Day.

Locals were surprised and saddened when Sprinkles Cupcakes, with a location at City Center Bishop Ranch, suddenly closed on New Year’s Eve.

Now, the cult-favorite cupcake shop appears to be back in San Ramon.

A new “Sprinkles Northern California” relaunch was announced on social media, with the brand saying it would reopen in the Bay Area on Feb 12, including the San Ramon shop at City Center Bishop Ranch.

Local chatter suggests that the opening did go ahead as planned. We’ll stop by to verify, but it looks like Sprinkles is back up and running.

Again, that’s a bit miraculous. The San Ramon store originally succumbed to an abrupt closure of stores nationwide, a move that reportedly caught employees, customers, and even the company’s founder off guard.

Now, the chain appears to be coming in for a second bite.

So, what changed? The early-2026 closure story was widely framed as a companywide decision to stop operating bakeries, with limited detail from ownership about what would happen next.

This Northern California relaunch suggests something changed quickly — whether that is a new operating arrangement, a regional operator, or another structure.

In other words, the corporate machinations behind this phoenix-like revival aren’t yet clear. What’s clear is that one of my favorite birthday cake style cupcakes appears to be back. So we’ll take that win.

Sprinkles is known for its cupcake ATM. The automated machine dispenses sweet treats to anyone with a credit card. The San Ramon location, perhaps a bit ironically, shares its space with Patelco credit union and its real ATMs.

You can find this newly-reopened phoenix of the cupcake world at 6000 Bollinger Canyon Road, Ste 1612, San Ramon, CA 94583.
