Contra Costa DA Investigated a Police-Involved Fatal Shooting, and They Have a Clear Result

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA – The local DA just completed a large report on a fatal police-involved shooting that took place in June of last year.

The report–and conclusion–are quite clear.

The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office has concluded that Antioch police officers acted lawfully in the fatal shooting of 26-year-old David Wali Bahrami, determining the officers used reasonable force in self-defense and defense of others — and that no criminal charges will be filed.

The finding was laid out in a public report released Friday, February 20, 2026, part of the DA’s practice of issuing written analyses after certain law enforcement-involved fatal incidents.

According to the DA’s report, the incident began early the morning of June 30, 2025, when dispatch received multiple 911 calls from a man later identified as Bahrami, including statements like “I’m about to kill someone.” Officers staged nearby and tried to communicate with him by phone as they worked to manage a potentially dangerous situation, the DA’s report says.

The report says Bahrami later exited the home and approached officers, then produced a large kitchen knife and ran toward them. One officer fired a less-lethal round that appeared to have no effect.

As Bahrami closed distance — described as roughly 15 to 20 feet away — two officers fired, and Bahrami was struck and fell to the ground with the knife still in his hand, according to the report. Officers attempted medical aid, but he died at the scene.

In its legal analysis, the District Attorney’s Office concluded the involved officers acted in lawful self-defense/defense of others and that their use of force was reasonable under the circumstances. The report states no further action will be taken in the case.

The DA’s office said the report is intended to explain the evidence reviewed and the legal principles applied — not to determine whether department policies were followed (that is typically handled through separate administrative reviews).

Contra Costa County uses a Law Enforcement Involved Fatal Incident protocol in which the DA’s office conducts an independent criminal-liability review, alongside investigations by involved agencies. The DA’s office has published similar reports for other incidents dating back years.
