For Classic, Unpretentious Sushi, I Love This Lafayette Neighborhood Restaurant

Lafayette, California – It feels like it can be impossible to find a normal sushi restaurant these days.

Everybody is leaning into sustainable, foraged items. Or they’re loading their rolls up with fancy and exotic tuna or other expensive fish, or pivoting to ramen/udon.

When I want a classic sushi experience, though, there’s a spot in Lafayette I like to visit: Oyama Sushi (3651 Mount Diablo Blvd, Lafayette, CA 94549).

Oyama is in a big, bright, airy space with giant windows looking out on Mount Diablo Blvd. It’s a large space, but it’s never overly full. That means you can drop in for a quick lunch and get great service, easy seating, and lovely views of downtown.

The staff at Oyama are welcoming, and the menu is absolutely classic. I like to get the lunch bento box.

It’s a great deal and includes your choice of two different items from a menu that includes sushi, teriyaki, sashimi, and more. I recently stopped in and got a bento box with gyoza and beef teriyaki, served with rice, salad, and miso soup, all for under $20.

Oyama has the typical menu of classic rolls to choose from – California rolls, tamago, veggie rolls, and more.

And if you’re feeling very celebratory, they even offer the option to serve your sushi in a big boat. You’ll need to buy a lot more rolls for this one, but it’s nice to know it’s there as an option.

Oyama feels like a neighborhood spot. The staff members are often casually chatting and joking with each other as they make the food, or even sometimes sitting in the dining room and enjoying lunch themselves.

The space feels like you’re sitting right in the midst of downtown. You can look out at the brand-new development as it comes together, or enjoy the theatrics of people trying to park in the tight spots by the post office and Trader Joe’s.

Oyama’s classic and unpretentious. It’s not the kind of place you would necessarily go for innovative rolls or high-concept food. But if you’re looking for delicious neighborhood eats and pleasant hospitality, I always find it’s a great bet.
