WALNUT CREEK, CALIFORNIA – Retail theft has been a problem locally for a while. But one alleged criminal took things a step further, stealing with an institution that even most thieves wouldn’t consider.
Walnut Creek police say a man was arrested after allegedly stealing items from St. Matthew’s Church.

According to the Walnut Creek Police Department, the theft happened about a week before the department shared the update publicly.
Detectives later located the stolen property and arrested Jason Burnett, a 52-year-old Martinez resident. Police said the property was recovered and Burnett was taken into custody.
The allegation drew attention partly because the reported theft involved a house of worship.
“Robbing a church plus getting arrested on Good Friday equals karma! Great job WCPD!” wrote local resident Kit S, while Ann R added “Stealing from a church. Way wrong.”
Others took a slightly more humorous approach, poking fun at the old electronics that Burnett allegedly stole. One local commented online “Hand held camcorders still exist?”
