Lafayette’s Free Downtown Play Space and Art Space Is Now Open

LAFAYETTE, CA — Downtown Lafayette now has something local parents (and grandparents!) are always hunting for: an easy, indoor place to play that does not require signing up for a class, booking a party, or pulling out a credit card at the door.

The new All Ages Recreation Den is now open at 3561-A Mt. Diablo Blvd., near El Jarro and Postino, according to All Ages Recreation Downtown, the nonprofit behind the project. The group says the location is a short walk from multiple schools, senior living communities, the Lafayette Library, and the Lafayette-Moraga Trail.

AARD also notes that more hours are expected to be added after May 20.

The Lafayette Chamber celebrated the Den’s grand opening with a ribbon cutting on March 10, describing All Ages Recreation Downtown as a 501(c)(3) and 509(a)(2) nonprofit focused on developing more all-ages and all-abilities recreation destinations and programs in and near downtown Lafayette.

What You’ll Find Inside

The Den is designed around casual, low-barrier play. A City of Lafayette update described the space as offering arts and crafts, toddler activity tables, lawn games, and other surprises, with drop-in art and play hours during its early opening period.

The Bay Area Telegraph stopped by and found nice chess tables outdoors.

We also saw pool tables, couches where teens might enjoy hanging out, an art display, and foosball.

There’s an arcade-style basketball table in the back, too.

For the all-ages component, AARD offers events like drop-in mahjong for the 65+ age group on Wednesdays.

That lines up with the kind of programming AARD has already brought to Lafayette through its pop-up recreation efforts, including giant Jenga, giant Connect 4, chess, wooden train tracks, ping pong, kinetic sand, crafts, and other kid-friendly activities.

Why This Is Such a Nice Addition Downtown

AARD frames its mission around a simple but important idea: downtown areas need more no-cost recreation options, especially places where people of different ages can play, gather, and linger.

The nonprofit says it was founded in 2023 by Lafayette community members who saw a need for more downtown recreation options for all ages.

That makes the Den feel closer to a “third place” for families — somewhere to stop after the library, before dinner, during an errand run and the like.

Part Of A Bigger Recreation Push

The Den is also part of a broader push for more play space near downtown Lafayette. The City of Lafayette says it is working with AARD and other community stakeholders on the Two Parks Collaborative Concept, which includes improvements to Leigh Creekside Park and the creation of a new active play area at the Gazebo site downtown.

AARD is also fundraising for downtown parks, creek walks, and ongoing pop-up recreation programs.

Want to stop by? Check the AARD website before you head over, since again, the hours are always changing. But generally, the space is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for all ages, evenings on Tuesdays, and Wednesdays for seniors only at the moment.
