A Major Celebrity Just Sold Her Lamorinda Home for $2m Over Asking
Isn’t it ironic?
Well, not really. But it still is interesting!
One of Lamorinda’s most famous celebrity homeowners has officially moved on from her longtime Lafayette estate — and buyers competed hard to get it.
Alanis Morissette’s Upper Happy Valley home has sold for $9,600,108, more than $2.1 million above its $7.495 million asking price.
In other words, Morissette’s house rained money on the singer…albeit not on her wedding day.
The six-bedroom property was listed on May 12 and went pending just one week later, before closing on June 1. That is a remarkable result even by the standards of Lafayette’s high-end real estate market, particularly for a home that had been on the market for only a matter of days.
Morissette purchased the property in 2018 for $4.97 million, meaning the singer nearly doubled her purchase price before selling. With those kinds of gains, she won’t need a free ride, even if she already paid.
The 0.69-acre estate sits in Lafayette’s sought-after Upper Happy Valley neighborhood and spans approximately 5,270 square feet. Built in 1947 and extensively updated, the single-story home blends contemporary style with the indoor-outdoor lifestyle that has made the area especially appealing to Bay Area families.
Inside, the property includes a large great room, formal dining room, wine cellar, library, office, gym and bonus room, along with a gourmet kitchen designed for entertaining. The primary suite has its own sitting area, spa-style bathroom, outdoor shower access, and dedicated massage and yoga spaces.
Outside, the estate has a pool and spa, outdoor pavilion, built-in kitchen, fire pit, sports court, play field, fruit trees, raised garden beds and a custom treehouse. There is also a detached pool house with a full bathroom and sauna.
Morissette, the Grammy-winning singer behind “Jagged Little Pill,” “Ironic,” “You Oughta Know,” and other defining songs of the 1990s and beyond, has been a notably enthusiastic Bay Area resident. In a 2024 interview, she said she had wanted to live in the Bay Area since she was 21 and described the region as “a big, big piece” of who she is.
Her departure from the Lafayette home comes after nearly eight years in the community, giving the sale an added dose of local celebrity intrigue.
For the buyer, the result is a rare chance to own a substantial Upper Happy Valley estate with resort-style amenities and a bit of pop-culture history attached.
With the high selling price, Morissette likely got some good advice that she just did take from Stephanie Mull and Stella Tsakonas of Compass, who handled the sale.
The kicker? Center Rep happens to be staging Jagged Little Pill, the musical based on Morissette’s music, just as the singer departs the Bay Area.
Now, that genuinely is ironic!
