CALIFORNIA STATE – For generations of Californians, In-N-Out Burger has been a homegrown institution, the source of late-night Double-Doubles, Animal Style orders and fiercely defended opinions about what makes a burger great.
But a new nationwide ranking suggests two chains are edging out the California favorite when Americans are asked who makes the best-tasting fast-food burger.
Five Guys took the top spot in YouGov’s 2026 U.S. restaurant brand rankings, with 15.5% of respondents naming it the best for burgers.

Burger King landed just behind it at 15.0%, while In-N-Out ranked third with 12.1%. YouGov shared a copy of the results with the Bay Area Telegraph.
Wendy’s came in fourth at 10.2%, followed by McDonald’s at 8.7%.
The result may be hard for some California burger loyalists to swallow. In-N-Out, founded in Baldwin Park in 1948, has built its reputation around a tightly focused menu, fresh ingredients and made-to-order burgers. For many customers, its appeal is as much about consistency and nostalgia as it is about the food itself.

Still, the YouGov ranking shows that when consumers nationwide were asked a straightforward question — which fast-food restaurant has the best-tasting burgers — Five Guys and Burger King came out ahead.
The study drew from more than 44,300 U.S. adults between March 1, 2025, and February 28, 2026. It ranked fast-food chains across several food categories, including burgers, chicken, pizza, fries, tacos and deli sandwiches.
That’s a huge sample, lending scientific credence to the results.
In-N-Out did perform strongly in other parts of the report. It ranked No. 5 among fast-food brands for perceived quality, behind Chick-fil-A, Jersey Mike’s, Wendy’s and Firehouse Subs. It also appeared in the top 10 for perceived value.

That suggests the chain’s reputation remains solid even if it did not take the top burger title in this particular national poll.
The report also found that Americans gave McDonald’s a commanding lead for fries, Chick-fil-A the top spot for chicken, Taco Bell the crown for tacos and burritos, and Pizza Hut the top ranking for pizza.
For Golden State residents, though, the results are likely to prompt a much more important question: Would you really choose a Whopper or a Five Guys cheeseburger over an Animal Style Double-Double? Be honest.
