Big, Free Labor Day Concert is Coming to Walnut Creek

WALNUT CREEK, CALIFORNIA – Walnut Creek is closing out summer with a big evening of live music in the heart of the city — and it will not cost anything to attend.

The Walnut Creek Concert Band will perform its annual Labor Day “ParKoncert” on Monday, September 7, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Civic Park.

According to the city’s official event announcement, the outdoor concert will feature memorable movie and musical soundtracks, traditional marches, patriotic selections and other concert-band favorites.

The performance will take place on the lawn at Civic Park, located at 1375 Civic Drive near the Walnut Creek Library and City Hall.

Organizers are encouraging concertgoers to bring blankets or portable chairs and settle in for the hour-long performance. Families can also pack a picnic and turn the free show into an easy end-of-summer evening downtown.

The concert is presented by the Walnut Creek Concert Band, which has served as the city’s official band since 1987. The Walnut Creek City Council selected the ensemble to help promote community identity and civic pride.

Its repertoire stretches across an unusually wide range of American concert-band music, including works associated with George Gershwin, Aaron Copland, Frank Sinatra and John Philip Sousa. The ensemble performs at civic ceremonies as well as larger concerts at Civic Park, Rossmoor and the Lesher Center for the Arts.

The band is directed by Walnut Creek resident Matthew Sadowski, who also serves as director of bands at UC Berkeley. Its musicians come from a variety of professional backgrounds and continue rehearsing and performing as part of the community ensemble.

No admission charge is required for the Labor Day concert. Because seating will be on the lawn, attendees should bring their own chairs or blankets and may want to arrive early to find a comfortable spot.
