ORINDA, CALIFORNIA — A loud Saturday night party brought Orinda police to the Sleepy Hollow neighborhood. But when officers arrived, they discovered that the man at the center of the festivities had a pretty good reason to celebrate.
Michael Rubinstein was turning 90.
And, apparently, he was doing it with enough enthusiasm to warrant a visit from law enforcement.
A Birthday to Remember
According to the Orinda Police Department, Rubinstein was celebrating with family and friends when officers responded to the party.
“Apparently, when you turn 90, you’re allowed to get a little rowdy,” the department joked in its account of the encounter.
Police said officers investigated and let Rubinstein off with a warning. They also stayed for a slice of birthday cake and wished him a happy 90th.
The department suggested that discovering his party was lively enough to bring police to the door might have been Rubinstein’s best present of the night.
It’s certainly a memorable addition to the birthday scrapbook.

Another Reason to Celebrate
There was more to the occasion than a milestone birthday.
Sixteen Scandals 80’s, the band that played the event, described it as a combined 90th birthday and wedding celebration, congratulating Mike and Louana Rubinstein.
In its own account, the band said it opened the show by announcing that the party would continue until the city kicked them out.
Then the police actually showed up.
The musicians responded with a particularly appropriate song choice: “Every Breath You Take” by The Police.
The band said it played the song in the officers’ honor, adding one more punchline to an evening that already had plenty going for it.
A 90th birthday, a wedding celebration, live music, and police officers staying for cake. For a neighborhood called Sleepy Hollow, that’s a pretty lively night.
