CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA – Two 17-year-old boys from Discovery Bay died in a two-car crash near the Antioch-Brentwood boundary over the weekend, leaving the Liberty High School community grieving.
Both teens were student-athletes at the Brentwood school. Two other people were injured, including another Liberty student-athlete, according to the Contra Costa Herald’s report, which included information from Antioch police.
The collision happened near Deer Valley and Balfour roads around midnight Saturday night into Sunday, September 13.
Antioch police said dispatchers received a report at 12:11 a.m. Officers arrived at 12:21 a.m. and found a white BMW and a silver Infiniti.
Two people inside the Infiniti died at the scene. A third occupant was injured and taken to a hospital. The BMW’s driver also suffered injuries.
The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District said rescuers had to extricate two people from the vehicles. The two survivors were hospitalized with injuries described as moderate and not life-threatening, KTVU reported.
By Monday morning, the loss was weighing heavily on the school community.
The cause remains under investigation by Antioch police’s Traffic Unit. In its Sunday statement, the department said it was still confirming one victim’s identity and completing family notifications before releasing further information.
Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the collision, or has surveillance or dashcam footage from the area, to contact Sgt. Rob Green at 925-779-6864. The case number is 26-8743. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to the department.
