Bay Area Wine Region Named the Best in America, and It’s Not Napa or Sonoma

A Bay Area wine region just earned a major national honor, and the winner might surprise anyone who assumes Napa/Sonoma are the kings of Bay Area wine.

Livermore Valley has been named Wine Enthusiast’s 2026 American Wine Region of the Year, putting the East Bay destination in the national spotlight. The recognition is part of the publication’s Wine Star Awards.

For those of us in the 925, it’s a reminder that a celebrated wine country experience can be right in our own backyard.

Why Livermore Valley Won

In its announcement of the honor, Wine Enthusiast highlighted Livermore Valley’s combination of established wineries, smaller producers and a community willing to work together.

Writer and sommelier Tonya Pitts pointed to longtime names such as Wente Family Vineyards and Concannon Vineyard, alongside family operations experimenting with less familiar grapes, including Torrontes and Timorasso.

The publication also highlighted the region’s wine events and its high proportion of women winemakers. The award recognizes the region as a whole — its wines, people and visitor experience — rather than naming a single winning bottle.

For local wine industry leaders, the recognition follows years of work behind the scenes.

Familiar Wineries, New Reasons to Visit

The region has approximately 50 wineries, ranging from historic businesses to boutique producers, according to the wine community.

It is also sharpening its identity around two grapes. In 2025, Livermore Valley designated Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc as its signature varieties. The organization says a 2022 UC Davis study identified both as well suited to the region’s growing conditions.

That focus builds on a wine legacy with influence far beyond the East Bay. Wine Enthusiast noted Livermore Valley’s role in developing the Wente Chardonnay clone, which is used by winegrowers around the world.

The Livermore Valley Wine Community describes a tasting scene where visitors may encounter the winemaker behind the bar. Its website offers winery information, events and resources for planning a visit.

The new award gives East Bay residents another reason to explore those tasting rooms — and to brag to their more northerly friends about the honor.
