Forget Avocado Toast, California’s New Obsession is Avocado Coffee

Think of a cliche NorCal food, and avocado toast probably comes to mind. But now, there’s a new Bay Area food obsession that’s pushing avocado toast aside: avocado coffee.

That’s right–enterprising Bay Area chefs and baristas are combining avocado puree and other ingredients with espresso and coconut milk to create bespoke and unique coffee treats.

From Indonesia to Your Kitchen

Interestingly, this hip drink isn’t just a modern fad.

Avocado coffee has its roots in Indonesia, where it’s a beloved street drink. Traditionally, it’s made with blended avocado, condensed milk, ice, and strong coffee, resulting in a thick, sweet, and surprisingly refreshing beverage.

The creamy avocado not only adds a unique texture but also balances the coffee’s bitterness, creating a flavor profile that’s both indulgent and invigorating.

Avocado Coffee in SF

Starting Monday, January 8, Chef Nora Haron’s avocado coffee will be on offer at The Caffe by Mr. Espresso in Oakland, available until Saturday, January 20, 2024. Priced at just $6.50, this innovative creation promises to be more than just a beverage; it’s a journey of flavors.

Inspired by her travels to Bali last year, Chef Nora Haron encountered the delightful Kopi Avocado. Bringing back this exotic experience to the heart of San Francisco, Chef Nora has meticulously crafted her own rendition of this Balinese classic.

Her Avocado Coffee is a harmonious blend of fresh, creamy avocados, the luxurious sweetness of coconut condensed cream, and the deep, rich notes of locally roasted espresso beans. Each sip is designed to transport you to the tropical tranquility of Bali.
