PLEASANT HILL, CALIFORNIA — After months of waiting, Pleasant Hill shoppers finally have a date to circle on their calendars.

A Big New Japanese Market for Pleasant Hill

Osaka Marketplace already operates Bay Area stores in Fremont and Foster City. The company is known for Japanese groceries and imported products, along with fresh foods and prepared meals.

The Pleasant Hill location will bring that concept to the former Orchard Supply Hardware building downtown.

According to the City of Pleasant Hill, the new market will offer Japanese groceries, fresh produce, seafood, ready-to-eat meals and imported foods and goods.

Diablo magazine describes the Pleasant Hill store as 49,000 square feet. The city previously described the former hardware store space as 42,000 square feet. We’re just going to call it massive!

Plans for a Japanese Food Hall

One of the most interesting parts of the project involves the old hardware store’s garden center.

The city says Osaka plans to reuse that area as a semi-outdoor Japanese market hall with several small restaurants. The city described potential offerings including sushi, ramen, chicken karaage and bento boxes.

That could make Osaka a place to stop for a meal as well as a grocery run.

The city announced those food hall plans when it welcomed the project in 2025. Specific opening dates for the individual eateries have not been confirmed, so shoppers should stay tuned for details on which dining options will be available when the market opens.

From “Coming Soon” to an Opening Date

The opening has been a long time coming. Pleasant Hill originally announced the project in October 2025 and anticipated a mid-2026 opening.

More recently, a Downtown Pleasant Hill spokesperson told the Bay Area Telegraph that Osaka was expected to open in mid-November, though a specific day had not been announced at that point.

Now, according to Diablo magazine’s report, the date is November 20.

The new Osaka Marketplace is located at 155 Crescent Plaza in Downtown Pleasant Hill. Opening-day hours and details about any grand opening festivities have not been confirmed in the information we reviewed.
