Ghirardelli: A Rich History

The Ghirardelli Chocolate Company’s story starts in the mid-1800s with a charismatic Italian chocolatier named Domenico Ghirardelli. Having honed his craft in South America, he ventured to California during the Gold Rush. In 1852,he established his chocolate empire in San Francisco, laying the foundation for what would become one of America’s most beloved chocolate brands.

A Sweet Acquisition

Ghirardelli thrived as an independent company for over a century. However, in 1998, a new chapter began when Swiss chocolate giant Lindt & Sprüngli acquired Ghirardelli Chocolate Company. This move didn’t turn Ghirardelli into a Swiss company, but rather made it a subsidiary of Lindt & Sprüngli.

Hershey’s: A Different Giant

The Hershey Company, another name synonymous with chocolate, traces its roots back to Milton S. Hershey, who built a successful chocolate company in Pennsylvania during the late 19th century. Hershey’s and Ghirardelli operate as separate entities within the world of chocolate giants.

Chocolate Rivals, Not Siblings

So, is Ghirardelli owned by Hershey’s? The answer is a definitive no. Ghirardelli and Hershey’s exist as friendly competitors in the chocolate industry. Each maintains its own production processes, flavor profiles, and branding.

A Matter of Taste

Chocolate lovers might have their loyalties to either Ghirardelli or Hershey’s, and that’s completely okay! Choosing between them ultimately comes down to your taste preferences. Ghirardelli is often associated with a slightly more premium or gourmet image, while Hershey’s tends to focus on accessibility and classic American flavors.
