Photo: Rainbow Over Lahaina, Maui Before the Fires

The stunning photograph captures a beautiful rainbow over the city of Lahaina, Maui, before the devastating fires that destroyed the city in 2023.

I took the photo during a visit to Lahaina in 2020 for the Bay Area Telegraph. It was a sunny day in Lahaina itself, but a storm was brewing on the outskirts of the city.

Driving through town, I saw this beautiful rainbow forming over the iconic smokestack just outside town. I was able to snap the picture quickly from the passenger seat of the vehicle I was riding in.

It’s a powerful natural symbol of the town, alongside Lahina’s historic banyan tree.

Following the devastation of the town, this image stands out to me as a poignant reminder of Lahaina’s beauty. The rainbow is also a symbol of rebirth and rejuvenation, and I know that Lahaina will be rebuilt and will regain its former beauty once again.
