It’s bad news for pizza lovers in Walnut Creek, California–a fan-favorite pizza place (although not a local place, as we’ll get to below) has just shut down.
The announcement provoked some sadness on social media. One resident of Walnut Creek posted simply “OH NO!!!!!” when sharing the announcement.
Shelly S added “That’s too bad. It’s so sad downtown just isn’t the same anymore. Too many popular places have closed. Not the same as 5 years ago.”
Mitch C said “Too bad. We went several times over the past year…have always been happy with the food and service.”
Several residents brought up the high minimum wages for fast food workers, the results of a recent law change in California. It’s unclear whether this had any impact on the closure of the pizza place.
So which WC pizza place closed down? The unfortunate restaurant is California Pizza Kitchen. CPK had moved from its original location to one across South Main Street.

Many residents mentioned how the new location was smaller and harder to reach. That might have contributed to the restaurant’s closure.
CPK used to be located smack in the middle of Broadway Plaza. Its original location later became an Apple store.

Some residents were not at all upset about the closure, mostly because CPK is a large chain restaurant.
However, one resident pointed out “CPK is really affordable with the Costco gift cards -20% off – and then they have a great lunch special, happy hour and rewards club,” making it an affordable choice for long-time WC residents who may not be swimming in newly minted tech money.
The Good News
Here’s the good news, though. Although CPK is gone from Walnut Creek, the city still has plenty of much better (and still plenty cheap) options for amazing pizza.

Our favorite is Slice House. They have the best NY-style pizza in the Bay Area, and their slices are gigantic and inexpensive.
You can get a gigantic pizza big enough to feed a family of 5 for $32. That might seem like a lot for a pizza, until you see the gargantuan size of this thing!

Another great option–especially for families–is Skipolinis.
So mourn a moment for CPK. But then head to one of Walnut Creek’s other awesome restaurants to cheer yourself back up again.
And, do us a favor and share the news with your neighbors. Lots of people on Nextdoor are asking about the closure, and you can keep your friends & neighbors in the loop:

I sure hope the closing pizza place isn’t the one that pregnant women go to get their labor started.
