Contra Costa County Celebrates Grand Opening of New Administration Building

Martinez, CA – The Contra Costa County Administration Building is set to officially open on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The grand opening ceremony will take place at 1026 Escobar Street in Martinez, with a press conference held outside in the plaza.

The event will feature speeches from key officials, including Eric Angstadt, Chief Assistant County Administrator; Board Chair Federal D. Glover, District 5 Supervisor; and Brianne Zorn, Mayor of Martinez.

The newly constructed facility, developed in collaboration with design firm Perkins&Will and construction company Webcor, replaces an outdated office tower and a historic jail, both dating back to around 1902. The modern building and civic plaza now stand on the historic site, showcasing state-of-the-art architecture that complements the surrounding historic buildings.

The building embodies sustainable design, featuring on-site photovoltaics for energy efficiency, responsibly sourced finishes, and low embodied carbon materials. It significantly enhances the community space by introducing a new public law library, ground-floor retail spaces, and a parking garage. Additionally, street improvements and an advanced stormwater system address the unique groundwater challenges and topography of the site.

Internally, the building consolidates several key County administrative departments, including the Office of Racial Equity and Social Justice, the Law Library, the Public Defender, and the County Sheriff’s Civil Division. This consolidation aims to improve service delivery and enhance community interaction by bringing essential services under one roof.

The Contra Costa County Administration Building represents a significant investment in the community, promising to rejuvenate the downtown area of Martinez and provide a modern, sustainable, and efficient hub for county services. The public is invited to join the celebration and witness the unveiling of this new landmark.
