Another local, Terry K. of East Concord, described Yan’s as a “great little hole in the wall” known for its “fantastic fresh food, no MSG, and a great wine list.” He added that the restaurant also boasts “a reserve list that will blow your mind. Pages of older great vintages from around the world.”
Dragon Pond, also in Walnut Creek, was mentioned as a solid option.
Martinez Picks
In Martinez, Bamboo Garden was highlighted by Dorothy W. from Isabel Drive as a go-to spot. Craig K. of Canterbury Village also mentioned enjoying the dim sum at Ranch 99 Supermarket, noting, “Great for when you need a couple of pieces! There are tables and chairs available.”
Concord and Pleasant Hill Recommendations
Concord residents shared their love for Tasty Szechuan, a restaurant on Treat Boulevard. Jan S. from Holbrook Heights praised the “salt n pepper fish, broccoli beef, garlic eggplant, green beans, and combination chow mein,” calling it a “very clean and friendly” spot.
Ming’s in Pleasant Hill earned a particularly strong following. Several commenters, including Jeri B. from Clayton Valley, simply stated, “Ming’s, hands down,” as her top choice. Ann L., from Skander-Kiki-Odin, added that both Ming’s and China Chef were her favorites in the area.
Deborah J. from Ridgeview also gave high marks to Ming’s Pleasant Hill location, calling it a “5-star spot on Alhambra and Taylor.” She continued, “It’s been there for some years, great food, and very affordable. Many write-ups in food magazines.”
Another Pleasant Hill favorite, China Chef, located on Contra Costa Blvd, received a mention from Ann L. as a go-to spot alongside Ming’s.
Hunan on Clayton Rd. also had its fans. Karen W. from Clayton Valley Highlands praised the spot, noting, “Their combo chow fun and wor won ton are wonderful!!!”
Sharon C. of Mt. Diablo added, “Try Chinese Kitchen on Clayton Rd. It’s a small hole-in-the-wall type place with really good food.” Sharon pointed out that the place has been a staple of the community for decades, mentioning, “Those premises have been a Chinese restaurant, under the same name, for over 50 years.”

Pittsburg’s Wah Sing
In Pittsburg, Jess K. from Oak Hills South mentioned Wah Sing on Railroad Ave. as her go-to for Chinese cuisine, a spot lesser known to many in the discussion but clearly appreciated by some.
A Few More Favorites
Several other restaurants received honorable mentions, including Lucky Chef near Target in Sunny Acres, mentioned by John M. “It’s right by the lamps plus home goods next to Target and Chipotle. It’s in the other lot right next to them,” John explained.
For those looking for a vegan-friendly option, Veggie Today in Downtown Concord was recommended by Louise M. from Monte Gardens, who described it as “vegan and yummy.”
Other places like Dragon Spring on Pleasant Valley Road in Concord and Uncle Yu’s in Lafayette also made appearances, with John M. mentioning that Uncle Yu’s may be “a little pricey if you go at lunch,” but worth it for the quality.
I get Uncle Yu’s almost every week and can vouch for its deliciousness (and price tag!)
