5 Best Places to Go for a Run in the 925
Made a New Year’s resolution to get more exercise, or just looking for some fresh air in the East Bay?
We gathered the best places to go for a run in the 925–whether you’re experienced, or a beginner (like me!)
5. Contra Costa Canal Trail

An often overlooked gem, the Contra Costa Canal Trail winds through Pleasant Hill, Concord, and Walnut Creek. This paved pathway is especially runner-friendly, thanks to its gentle terrain and well-maintained surface—ideal for both casual joggers and interval trainers.
You’ll pass tree-lined stretches, quiet residential areas, and even a few dog-walking hotspots. If you need a break or want to do some stretching, you’ll find a handful of small parks and benches along the route.
I recommend starting at Heather Farm Park. There’s plenty of parking by the dog park in the back.
Why You’ll Love It:
- Mostly flat, making it accessible for all fitness levels
- Multiple access points for easy parking
- Shaded sections to help beat the heat in warmer months
4. Las Trampas Regional Wilderness
For a more challenging, natural setting, head to Las Trampas Regional Wilderness near San Ramon. This park offers a variety of dirt trails that wind through grassy hills, oak woodlands, and chaparral-covered slopes. While some trails can be quite steep, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the East Bay. Make sure to bring your trail-running shoes—this is not your typical flat, paved route.
Why You’ll Love It:
- Incredible vistas overlooking the surrounding valleys
- Rugged terrain perfect for building endurance and stamina
- A chance to experience local wildlife and wildflowers in season
3. Iron Horse Regional Trail

One of the most popular running routes in the 925, the Iron Horse Regional Trail stretches from Concord all the way down to Dublin. Built along a former railway corridor, this flat, paved path is a dream for distance runners who want to rack up mileage without dealing with traffic.
Along the way, you’ll pass through multiple parks, local neighborhoods, and downtown areas—giving you plenty of options for water stops and quick bites if you need an energy boost.
Watch out for bikes!
Why You’ll Love It:
- Long, continuous route for half- or full-marathon training
- Safe and well-marked, with distinct mileposts
- Family- and pet-friendly, making it a great spot for social runs
2. Lafayette Reservoir

A favorite among locals, the Lafayette Reservoir offers two distinct running experiences. The paved Lakeside Trail is a relatively easy 2.7-mile loop with gentle inclines—perfect for those who enjoy a scenic, waterside run. For a bigger challenge, try the Rim Trail, a 4.7-mile loop with more elevation gain and plenty of natural terrain. Whichever path you choose, you’ll love the serene environment and picturesque views of the water.

Why You’ll Love It:
- Suitable for runners of varying ability levels
- Gorgeous reservoir views and abundant wildlife
- Restrooms, picnic areas, and water fountains available on site
1. Mount Diablo State Park

Topping the list is the majestic Mount Diablo State Park, a haven for trail runners looking to push their limits. With numerous trails winding up and around the mountain, you can customize your route based on your desired distance and elevation.
The steep climbs can be challenging, but the reward is unparalleled: sweeping, 360-degree views of the Bay Area, including glimpses of San Francisco on clear days. Whether you run a shorter loop or tackle a summit trek, Mount Diablo is an unforgettable running destination.
Make sure to check in advance before going, as trails can close. And bring water, since there are few water stations.
Why You’ll Love It:
- Some of the most stunning vistas in the East Bay
- Trails ranging from moderate to highly challenging
- A true “runner’s high” that comes from conquering serious climbs
Whether you’re seeking a casual lakeside jog or a grueling uphill battle, the 925 area code has something to offer runners at every level.
