Last week, the Lafayette, California community was shocked by the brazen robbery attempt at the CVS pharmacy on Mount Diablo Blvd.
As we originally reported, robbers drove a car through the front of the pharmacy and attempted to steal the ATM inside the door.
The Lafayette Police Department has released a statement with more information about the robbery attempt.
According to the police, they originally heard about the robbery attempt because an “alert delivery driver” saw the robbery in progress and called 911.
Officers arrived, and two vehicles immediately fled the scene.
The vehicle used to ram the store—which was reportedly stolen—was left in the parking lot. A photo from the Lafayette Police Department shows the vehicle with a badly damaged front bumper.
The Lafayette Police say that there were 3 to 5 masked suspects. This is clearly a larger operation, with a goal of using one vehicle to break down the door while other accomplices would run in and grab the ATM.
ATMs are extremely heavy, so it’s not surprising that this robbery attempt included multiple vehicles and a larger crew.
The Lafayette Police Department says that “officers pursued the vehicles through the tunnel into Oakland, but the pursuit was terminated.”

To see how recovery efforts are going, we stopped by the CVS pharmacy the day after the robbery attempt. A large plywood facade had been constructed to cover the broken door, with a standard exterior door added so patrons could get in and out.
We’re pleased to report that only 24 hours after this terrifying robbery attempt, CVS had reopened—ATM and all.
It’s a testament to the resilience of this local business and the staff members that they were still here to serve patrons the next day—and even offered to retrieve prescriptions for people through the mangled wreckage of their front door on the morning that the robbery occurred.
Unfortunately, this robbery appears to be part of a larger uptick in crime here in the 925. On Saturday night, three armed men reportedly burst into a popular restaurant in Walnut Creek and robbed patrons of their wallets and watches.
