Firefighters Perform CPR, Save Dog Clinging to Life After 2-Alarm Concord Fire

CONCORD — A Sunday-evening garage blaze on Crestwood Court mushroomed into a two-alarm incident that scorched three houses, torched nearby vegetation and left a beloved family dog clinging to life, according to Contra Costa County Fire Protection District (Con Fire) officials.

A sudden “pop,” then flames everywhere

Residents told firefighters they heard a loud “pop” from the garage of an 1,800-square-foot ranch home just after 5 p.m. Minutes later, flames had engulfed the structure, leapt into drought-stressed juniper shrubs, and—with help from 20-mph gusts and single-digit humidity—jumped first to a neighbor’s roof, then across the street, and even ignited a palm tree two blocks away.

Dog revived with CPR

Crews searching one smoke-charged residence discovered a dog overcome by heat and smoke. Firefighters performed CPR, reviving the pet before transferring it to county animal services for emergency care. No people were injured, but three residents were displaced; Red Cross volunteers provided temporary lodging and supplies. The two primary homes involved were declared uninhabitable, Con Fire said.

Why it spread so fast

The fire spread to due a “perfect recipe” of dry ornamental shrubs, wind, low humidity, and radiant heat. Investigators say embers lofted from the initial garage fire landed in a cluster of 15-foot juniper bushes—nicknamed “gasoline plants” for their high resin content—setting off a chain reaction.

With California’s wildfire season arriving earlier each year, officials urged homeowners to replace flammable landscaping and clear at least five feet of defensible space around structures.

Ongoing investigation

Anyone with doorbell-camera footage from the 1800 block of Crestwood Court between 4:45 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. Sunday is asked to contact the Con Fire Fire Investigation Unit at 925-941-3300.
