Massive 42,000 SqFt Japanese Marketplace in Pleasant Hill is Almost Here as Early Signage Goes Up

PLEASANT HILL, CALIFORNIA – One of the biggest food-related additions planned for Downtown Pleasant Hill looks like it is getting more real by the day.

And by big, we mean REALLY big.

Bay Area Telegraph has now spotted early signage going up for Osaka Marketplace at the former Orchard Supply Hardware building in the Downtown Pleasant Hill shopping center — the clearest visual sign yet that the long-anticipated Japanese grocery and food hall project is moving closer to opening.

And this is not a small project.

According to the City of Pleasant Hill, Osaka Marketplace is planned for the vacant 42,000-square-foot former OSH space, where it is expected to bring a full Japanese grocery store plus a semi-outdoor market hall with several mini restaurants. The city said the concept will include offerings such as sushi, ramen, chicken karaage, and bento boxes.

What Osaka Marketplace is bringing to Pleasant Hill

City materials describe Osaka as much more than a standard supermarket. Pleasant Hill officials said the operator plans to reuse the old garden center area to create a semi-outdoor Japanese market hall, blending grocery shopping with prepared food and small dining concepts. The city called it a “grocerant” — essentially a grocery store and mini restaurant hub in one building.

That could make the new Pleasant Hill location a major regional draw, especially for shoppers looking for Japanese groceries, ready-to-eat meals, and harder-to-find imported goods. The city says the store is expected to carry authentic Japanese groceries, fresh produce, seafood, ready-to-eat meals, and imported foods and goods.

Where it is going

The store is headed to 155 Crescent Plaza in Downtown Pleasant Hill, the large former Orchard Supply Hardware box near the Century Theatres area. Downtown Pleasant Hill’s own store directory now lists Osaka Marketplace as “Coming Soon,” showing the project as an active incoming tenant.

When is it supposed to open?

This has been the trickiest part.

The most authoritative timeline publicly posted by the City of Pleasant Hill said Osaka Marketplace was anticipated to open in mid-2026.

At the same time, later regional reports described the opening in broader terms, with SFGATE reporting last fall that the Pleasant Hill store was expected to open in November 2026, while the San Francisco Chronicle later referred to the Pleasant Hill opening as expected in summer 2026.

When we stopped by, we got a peek inside. It looks like the interior isn’t even close to being built out.

Here are the Bay Area Telegraph, we’re betting on the November or later timeline moreso than Summer.

Why people are excited about Osaka

Osaka Marketplace has already built a following through its existing Bay Area stores. Its official site describes the company as a locally owned Japanese supermarket with locations now operating in Fremont and Foster City.

The Fremont store includes a cafe and food court, and the company highlights offerings including fresh sushi and sashimi, Japanese grocery items, and specialty events tied to Japanese food culture.

That existing footprint helps explain why Pleasant Hill residents have been so eager for the store to arrive. A full-scale Japanese marketplace of this size would instantly become one of the more distinctive food destinations along the I-680 corridor.

The bigger picture for Downtown Pleasant Hill

Osaka Marketplace is also part of a broader evolution underway at Downtown Pleasant Hill. In its announcement, the city said the market would join a growing list of newer additions in the district, including Paris Baguette, Morgan Territory Brewing, Batter N’ Icing, Cantina Jack’s, Crumbs Breakfast & Lunch Bar, and The Royale. City officials framed Osaka as part of the continued revitalization of the downtown area.
