The 7 Best Things to Do in Truckee in the Winter

Truckee, California in the Lake Tahoe area transforms into a winter paradise each year, offering a magical escape for families, outdoor enthusiasts, and anyone looking to indulge in the season’s joys.

From thrilling ski slopes to cozy fireside activities, there’s no shortage of winter fun in this Sierra Nevada gem.

As I write this, I just got back from a trip to Truckee where there were 3+ feet of snow on the ground! Here’s my top picks for winter activities.

7. Explore Historic Downtown Truckee

Kick off your winter adventure by wandering through the historic downtown Truckee. This area is the cultural heart of the town, brimming with charming shops, artisan boutiques, and gourmet restaurants housed in authentically preserved buildings.

The vibrant atmosphere and rich history make it the perfect starting point for your Truckee winter experience.

One popular dining choice that’s a bit more casual is the Jax at the Tracks diner. Guy Fieri visited it for Diners Drive-ins and Dives!

6. Visit the Kidzone Museum

Next on the list is a visit to the Kidzone Museum, an ideal stop for families with young children. This interactive museum offers a range of exhibits and activities designed to inspire and educate children through play.

From hands-on science experiments to creative art projects, it’s a wonderful way to spend a cold winter’s day indoors.

The museum is housed in a bubble-like building that withstands even the heaviest snows. It’s a little safe haven where kids can run around even on chilly days.

5. Go Sledding

No winter visit to Truckee is complete without experiencing the joy of sledding. Truckee offers numerous hills perfect for all ages, providing a fun and exhilarating way to enjoy the snow.

Whether you’re laughing with family or racing friends, sledding is a quintessential winter activity that brings out the child in everyone.

If you stay at an AirBNB, you might be able to sled in your own backyard (be careful)! Donner Memorial State Park is another popular DIY sledding spot.

4. Ice Skate at Northstar Village

As the evening sets in, head over to Northstar Village for an enchanting ice skating experience. The village ice rink, surrounded by twinkling lights and cozy fire pits, offers a picturesque setting for making memories.

Whether you’re a seasoned skater or stepping onto the ice for the first time, you’re sure to enjoy this magical winter activity.

The ice rink is surrounded by comfy chairs and fire pits for non-skaters. Skate rentals are reasonably priced (it cost me $44 to skate with my son) and include a helmet.

3. Go Tubing at Soda Springs

For an adrenaline-pumping adventure, Soda Springs Mountain Resort’s tubing park is a must-visit. With specially designed tubing lanes and a convenient “magic carpet” lift, it’s an exciting way for the entire family to enjoy the snow.

Their Tube Town is perfect for bigger kids and adults, and their Mountain Adventure area has a smaller tubing hill for the littlest ones.

I visited and tried both places. My older son (age six) loved tubing both spots, and the larger tubing hill–despite being 400 feet long–wasn’t too fast or scary.

2. Roast S’mores at The Ritz

For a more relaxed evening or afternoon, gather around a fire pit at The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe, to roast s’mores under the starlit sky.

This luxurious experience combines the rustic charm of outdoor fire pits with the elegance of gourmet s’mores, creating a perfect setting for family bonding or a romantic evening.

For guests of the hotel, there’s a smores experience every afternoon, which features house-made marshmallows. Visitors can stop by and buy a smores kit from the outdoor restaurant, though, and roast them at the firepit.

We took the gondola from Northstar and enjoyed smores with some lightly-falling snow!

1. Ski!

The pinnacle of Truckee’s winter activities is, without a doubt, skiing. With access to some of the best ski resorts in the world, including Palisades (formerly Squaw Valley), Alpine Meadows, and Northstar California, Truckee is a skier’s paradise.

The resorts offer a diverse range of trails suited for beginners, intermediates, and experts, ensuring that everyone, regardless of skill level, can experience the thrill of skiing in the Sierra Nevada.

Truckee in the winter is an experience unlike any other, offering a blend of adventure, relaxation, and unforgettable memories. From the historic charm of downtown Truckee to the exhilarating slopes of its world-class ski resorts, there’s something for everyone in this snowy haven. So pack your winter gear and set off for an adventure in Truckee, where the best of winter awaits!
