Two People Died at This Walnut Creek Intersection, and Locals Want Change

Walnut Creek, CA – Tragedy has struck twice at the intersection of Ygnacio Valley and Oak Grove roads in Walnut Creek, leaving residents deeply concerned about the safety of the busy crossing. The deaths—one in 2021 and another just weeks ago—have ignited a call for action to prevent further loss of life.
In October 2021, Adam Kao, a 54-year-old Walnut Creek resident, lost his life after crashing his sedan into a sound wall near the intersection. According to police, Adam exited his vehicle and walked into the roadway, where he was struck by an oncoming car. The driver, a woman who remained on the scene, cooperated fully with investigators. The incident shut down eastbound Ygnacio Valley Road for hours as police worked to reconstruct what happened.

The most recent fatality occurred under similar circumstances, though few details have been released. Witness accounts suggest a pedestrian may have been crossing the street during early morning hours when visibility is low.
The intersection has long been a source of anxiety for residents, who shared their thoughts on social media. Jennifer O., who frequently runs in the area, described it as “completely blind to pedestrians crossing to the walk signal island.” She said cars heading west on Ygnacio Valley Road often “fly through the turn” onto Oak Grove, creating a high-risk environment.

Sue A., who passed through the intersection minutes before the latest accident, echoed those concerns. “It’s especially dangerous early in the morning around 5 a.m.,” she said, adding that she frequently sees cars running red lights and speeding through the area.

Other residents shared similar fears. Kristi M., a longtime Walnut Creek resident, suggested building a pedestrian bridge to provide a safer crossing. “I always tell my kids never to cross the street there,” she said, recalling multiple near-misses her family has experienced at nearby crossings.

Several comments underscored the urgency of addressing speeding in the area. “The city needs to do multiple things to reduce the speeding,” said Tamara W., while Paula P. observed that “this area seems to have a lot of [accidents], sadly.”

Matt S., who drove past the scene shortly before the most recent incident, recalled seeing a stalled car and a person standing near it. “I was thinking how dangerous of a situation she was in,” he said, speculating that the pedestrian involved might have been the same person.

City officials have not announced specific changes for the intersection, but local advocates are pushing for immediate action. Suggestions include installing speed cameras, adding enhanced crosswalks, or implementing stricter traffic enforcement to deter reckless driving.

While authorities continue to investigate, the community is left grappling with grief and fear. “It’s so heartbreaking,” said Kay W., expressing condolences to the families involved. Another commenter, Patty W., summed up the sentiment shared by many: “Prayers for all involved. This can’t keep happening.”

For now, drivers and pedestrians alike are urged to exercise extra caution, particularly during early morning hours when visibility is poor. Residents hope their collective calls for safety improvements will lead to change before another tragedy occurs.
