I Tried the Bay Area’s Rapidly Expanding “Superfood” Shop, With a Location Coming Soon To San Ramon

Palmetto Superfoods, known for its authentic acai bowls and plant-based menu, is rapidly expanding across the Bay Area and beyond. Founded in San Francisco’s Inner Richmond in 2019, the chain has since grown to multiple locations throughout the Bay Area, with new openings planned for San Ramon, Berkeley, Fremont, and even Hawaii.

I visited the Santana Row location in San Jose to try their bowls to see what makes the brand so popular.

Palmetto’s signature base is its authentic acai blend, made from Brazilian acai berries naturally sweetened with fruit, instead of refined sugar. The company emphasizes that its acai isn’t diluted, giving it a thicker texture and richer flavor than others.

All bases are plant-based, dairy free, and vegan, with optional add-ons like honey, bee pollen, honey almond granola, and collagen powder. The menu also features gluten-free, nut-free, and organic choices.

Customers can build their own bowl by choosing a base, granola, fruit, and finishes. Base options include acai, pitaya (dragon fruit), coconut, matcha avocado, spirulina, and steel-cut oats. Toppings range from fresh fruit like strawberries, blueberries, banana, and mango to nut butters, seeds, cacao nibs, and granola.

For anyone who prefers a ready-made option. Palmetto also offers signature bowls that combine all the essentials, with base, granola, fruit, and finishes.

All bowls are available in three sizes: small (8 oz, $9.50), medium (16 oz, $13.50), and large (24 oz, $16.50).

I tried Palmetto Superfoods’ Bay Blend, one of their signature bowls, which includes acai, coconut beach, chia pudding, almond honey, granola, strawberries, blueberries, banana, goji berries, cacao nibs, almond butter, and honey. I really liked it. It was a healthy option that tasted great. I ordered the medium size to share, and it was pretty filing but still light and refreshing.

There aren’t many acai bowls spots in the area, so I loved finally finding a place that offers so many different bases and toppings to try. It’s a great choice for anyone looking for a refreshing, plant-based snack or meal.

In addition to bowls, Palmetto offers a variety of smoothies made with the same clean, plant-based ingredients. Their lineup includes several unique options from the Avocado Matcha Love, a creamy green smoothie with matcha and avocado, to the Let Me Love You Smoothie, featuring pitaya dragonfruit and fresh fruit.

The location that I visited in Santana Row was small and had a short line, but the service moved pretty quickly. Most Palmetto locations are designed for quick, grab-and-go orders. During peak hours, stores can get busy, but customers consistently praise the freshness, presentation, and variety of options.

Palmetto Superfoods has built a strong reputation for transparency about ingredients and consistency in quality across locations. With its rapid expansion and focus on clean, customizable meals, Palmetto seems to be solidifying its place as one of the Bay Area’s go-to spots for acai and smoothie lovers.
