Fancy, Eco-Friendly Shoe Spot in Broadway Plaza Closes Forever

WALNUT CREEK, CALIFORNIA – A store selling eco-friendly shoes at Broadway Plaza is officially no more.

This former spot shut its doors in early January for the last time. We’re hearing reports that it closed down on January 11, and the store’s Yelp page now lists it as closed.

This former planet-friendly shoe spot was Allbirds, at 259 Broadway Plz (near Aritzia).

It sounds like the local closure wasn’t necessarily related to Walnut Creek or the store’s performance, but was part of a bigger trend from the company.

In its Q1 2024 earnings materials, Allbirds said it closed three U.S. retail stores in the quarter and remained on track with a previously communicated plan to close 10-15 U.S. locations. It seems like our local store got caught up in that list.

If you have not shopped the brand before, Allbirds is a San Francisco-based footwear and apparel company best known for minimalist sneakers marketed around comfort and lower-impact materials. It was co-founded by New Zealand native Tim Brown and renewables entrepreneur Joey Zwillinger.

Rumor has it there’s a New Balance coming into the same spot. We’ll keep you posted as soon as we know more. Make sure to join my free 925 News newsletter so I can keep you in the loop.
