CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA — A hiker with a serious leg injury was airlifted from Mount Diablo on Saturday, September 12, after becoming stranded on steep terrain near Fossil Ridge and the Summit Trail.
The rescue brought together a helicopter crew, a rescue line technician and other emergency responders to get the injured person off the mountain and into medical care.
East Bay Regional Park District spokesperson Jen Vanya told Patch that the hiker was in an extremely steep, inaccessible area. The response involved the district’s EAGLE 8 helicopter.
Getting the patient out required a complex aerial rescue. Rescuers secured the hiker to a line before lifting the patient toward the helicopter above.
The hiker was successfully extracted and transported for medical care. The available report did not identify the patient, explain how the injury happened or provide an update on their condition.
