PLEASANTON, CALIFORNIA – Driving to downtown Pleasanton on a summer evening, you’ll find a surprising traffic jam.
Why is there a long line of cars snaking down the street in this otherwise quiet East Bay town? The reason is simple: Meadowlark Dairy.

Meadowlark Dairy is a classic drive-in dairy and ice cream spot, a local treasure dating back multiple generations.
The ice cream aspect of Meadowlark, along with its iconic drive-in, began in 1969. However, the dairy itself has roots in Pleasanton, California that stretch back over 100 years.

Shockingly little has changed about Meadowlark in the intervening decades. The hand-lettered signs, the blessedly unrenovated drive-in, and the simple menu remain almost exactly as they were in the 1960s.
To order from Meadowlark, you drive up and join the line. During the winter, the wait can be fairly short. But on a warm summer evening, you can expect to wait half an hour or more.

As you approach the front of the line, you’ll drive into Meadowlark’s wooden drive-through. As you roll over an old-timey gas station-style tube on the ground, you’ll hear the clang of a bell, alerting staff to your arrival.
The staff, often local teenagers working their first summer jobs, will come to your car window to take your order. Meadowlark, like many ice cream places, has served as the starting point for countless Pleasanton teens earning some extra pocket money.

Placing your order is simple. Meadowlark offers a handful of classic ice cream flavors, such as chocolate, vanilla, pineapple, and strawberry. There are no toppings or fancy add-ons to complicate things. You can get basics like a milkshake too, but the focus here is on classic, no-frills ice cream.

The prices have changed since the 1950s, but not as much as you might expect. A hefty cup of ice cream still costs only $3.50. That’s a bargain compared to the fancy, overpriced options at nearby spots, where you might pay double or more.
The ice cream itself is good, but the real draw of Meadowlark is the experience. As you drive away, you can quickly enjoy your sweet treat, find a nearby spot to park, and hang out outdoors. Meadowlark also sells pints of ice cream you can take home if eating in the car isn’t your thing.
Though driving up is the classic way to visit, you can also walk up to a window.

Meadowlark features a quirky and beautiful display of umbrellas strung on a line above the ordering area. Many locals like to grab their ice cream and head to the park across the street for a picnic.

Although Meadowlark hasn’t changed much in generations, it’s finally expanding. The current owners recently announced plans to open a new location in Livermore, California, later this summer. It won’t have the classic charm of the 1960s drive-in, but you’ll probably get your ice cream faster!

In a region obsessed with change and progress, it’s refreshing to find a place like Meadowlark Dairy, which has served the community in nearly the same way for over 60 years.
When grappling with skyrocketing housing prices and the specter of AI disruption, take a moment to visit this Pleasanton gem. Enjoy a $3 ice cream, and press pause on the hectic pace of modern Bay Area life.
