Review: Teaspoon Boba Tea Has Opened in Berkeley, California

Berkeley, California, has a brand new and innovative bubble tea place. It’s located right by Cal and University Avenue, which means it’s almost certain to be popular with students.

I haven’t been a student for a long time, though, but I still stopped by to check it out because I love boba tea. I’m always excited to find a new bubble tea place opening in the East Bay.

The place is called Teaspoon. Technically, it’s in a soft launch, but it seems to be operating at nearly full capacity.

Teaspoon is a chain in California, with locations in Northern California and a few spots around the Bay Area.

Unlike some bubble tea places that have massive menus, Teaspoon seems to focus on quality and innovation rather than scale.

They offer just a few types of bubble tea, but many of them are quite creative. For example, the menu features the Ube Astra—coconut milk and ube syrup blended with honey boba and crème brûlée foam—dramatically purple and white.

The Liquid Gold is a honey oolong tea topped with cream, while Creamy Jasmine is a jasmine green tea.

A tea with black sugar also rounds out their classic offerings.

With the signature drinks, though, things get even crazier. They offer drinks like the Grasshopper, which has lychee, green tea, and juice on top—it’s extremely green! There’s also the Strawberry Royale, a layered matcha and strawberry purée drink that mimics the signature one at Boba Guys.

For the students, they even have a Red Bull Colada featuring pineapple marmalade, coconut, and Red Bull!

As a grown adult, I said “no thanks” to that one. But I did get a delicious Thai tea.

I like that they serve it in an extremely tall container. I’m not sure if that means they’re giving you more tea, but it certainly feels that way from the packaging.

The sweetness level was just right, which is very sweet. I also like that they presented the drink in a beautiful way, layering the ingredients rather than just mixing them together.

They also serve macarons and tasty desserts.

If you’re a bubble tea fan and want to try a new experience, it’s definitely worth heading through the tunnel from the 925 or walking over to Teaspoon to check it out.
